Why not take a trip out to one of the castles in the area and soak up the past!

Chateau de Jumilhac. The Chateau de Jumilhac, 20km north-east of Thiviers at the northern edge of the Dordogne/Creuse,
border is best known for its elaborate, 'sleeping-beauty' style rooves and ornate turrets.
Although it dates originally from the 13th century, Jumilhac was heavily modified during the 16th-17th
centuries, when it was re-invented as a luxurious renaissance dwelling. It was also at this time that the
famous rooves were added, along with the external walls and some magnificent entertainment rooms.
There are several very interesting rooms in the chateau, with grand fireplaces, staircase and parquetry
floors to admire in particular
When all the sumptuousness becomes too much you can visit the dungeon!
The chateau also has some fine gardens in the French style lots of short grass and small box hedges.

Chateau Boussac.
Built in the 12th Century for defence purposes. It was partly destroyed during the Hundred Years War by
the English, and was rebuilt around 1420-30 by Jean I of Brosse - a compatriot of Joan d'Arc
On the ground floor rooms are much as they were originally in the 15th century.
Particularly the Guard Room with an amazing flagstone floor and massive fireplaces.
The chateau was abandoned for a long time until in 1965 restoration began to take place.
This restoration continued for many years and has resulted in a magnificently furnished and
inhabited chateau. Temporary exhibitions are held during each summer of contemporary tapestries.
George Sand, the famous French novelist stayed at the chateau. Her book Jeanne was based around
the chateau and the close-by places of Les Pierres Jaumatres and Toulx-Sainte-Croix.
She also took refuge here at the chateau during the 1870 war.

Château de Rochechouart. Rochechouart is found in the Haute-Vienne department of Limousin, not far from Limoges.
The town of Rochechouart labels itself as 'the countryside of the meteorite', because a mere 214 million
years ago an enormous six billion tonne meteorite smashed into this spot - probably one of the largest
meteorites ever to hit the earth. Little remains as evidence.
Assuming that you are not concerned that 'lightning striking the same place twice' and you visit
Rochechouart, you will find a pretty walled town, and an attractive 13th century chateau.
At the Chateau you can also visit the interesting Museum of Modern Art, both indoors and in the
surrounding gardens.
One other interesting edifice in Rochechouart is the Church Saint Sauveur. Of particular interest is the
spire, a twisting octagonal spire that is very unusual in design (if you are an enthusiast of twisting spires
The Roman Baths at nearby Chassenon are worth a look if you are in this part of Limousin.

Château de Villemonteix. Initially this ancient lordship creusoise used to monitor access to the town of Ahun, which was once an
important town in the Gallo-Roman era [1].
Many trade routes crossed the lordship and the castle of Villemonteix derived its income by a toll.
In its early years, the castle still had defensive issues such as ditches, a drawbridge and a massive
dungeon.
But the building will take its present appearance towards the end of XVième century..
It will then be turned into a pleasure palace with a walkway of beauty, and its windows, clearly
announcing its membership in the houses of the Renaissance.
During the French Revolution, Villemonteix is the seat of a conspiracy monarchist. .
This is the end of the golden age of the castle. The estate was sold in 1888,
It was classified as an historic monument in 1946, and finally bought in 1982,
restored and opened to the public
